Premium Ceiling Acoustical Finish

CSI: 09 83 00 • 09 83 16

SonaKrete is a premium ceiling acoustic finish with a refined, plaster texture. SonaKrete is spray-applied, then troweled for a seamless finish, making it ideal for historic renovation and domed or arched ceilings. SonaKrete is specified in interior spaces to reduce excessive noise and improve intelligibility without compromising aesthetic objectives. Additionally, SonaKrete typically provides these features at a more competitive install cost than alternative acoustical plaster systems. SonaKrete is available in four standard and specially-matched custom colors.

Premium Acoustical Finish System

SonaKrete is composed of uniquely prepared cellulose fibers combined with natural fire retardants in a strict, quality-controlled manufacturing process to produce a Class 1, Class A-rated material.

SonaKrete is installed by an international network of professional contractors licensed by ICC. During application, SonaKrete is spray-applied in thin layers, and with each pass, troweled out to compress the product for a total thickness ranging from 1/4″ to 3/4″ thick. All edges are trimmed for a seamless appearance to adjacent surfaces or textures. The final result is a beautiful, hard finish, free from irregularities. Sound Control

SonaKrete reduces noise and reverberation that is present in interior spaces, significantly improving ambient sound quality and intelligibility without interfering with design goals.

SonaKrete’s superior acoustical performance is measured using the room reverberation method as per ASTM C 423 to calculate a noise reduction coefficient (NRC). At just 1/2″, Sonakrete achieves an impressive NRC of .65. This, along with a spray-applied and troweled application method, makes SonaKrete the perfect solution for historical renovation, concert halls, or any commercial project where aesthetics and acoustical performance are key.

CASE STUDY →

The historic Central Station Hotel in Memphis, Tennessee, transformed a landmark rail station into a vibrant destination that celebrates the city’s rich musical heritage. To address acoustic challenges created by active rail service adjacent to the building while preserving its historic character, SonaKrete was applied throughout key spaces, including the Grand Hall, bar, and Listening Lounge. The acoustical finish reduces reverberation and excess noise, enhancing guest comfort while complementing the hotel’s Roman Doric architecture. Available in both White and a custom Iron Ore color, SonaKrete helped achieve the project’s acoustic, aesthetic, and performance goals.

DURABILITY

SonaKrete is applied with a patented water-based glue that provides a resilient bond strength of
800 psf.

Unlike similar acoustic plaster systems, SonaKrete is extremely abuse-resistant. SonaKrete does not crack or spall with age, abuse, or movement from building components, which is often typical with cementitious or plaster-based materials.

SUBSTRATE COMPATIBILITY

SonaKrete adheres to properly prepared smooth substrates such as level 4 primed drywall and plaster, and conforms to curved ceiling configurations such as arches and domes.

Surfaces to receive SonaKrete are to be inspected prior to installation to determine if surfaces are acceptable.

TYPICAL PROJECTS

SonaKrete is typically used as an exposed ceiling finish to reduce excessive noise and reverberation and provide versatile color options. It is appropriate for interior spaces such as universities, courtrooms, ballrooms, theaters, and any project where aesthetics and acoustical performance are critical.

Please see our Projects Gallery for more examples of how SonaKrete can be customized to meet your project requirements.
